Jesus Loves Me
(Anna Bartlett Warner)

The Profound Simplicity of God’s Love

LYRICS (Click to minimize)

Jesus loves me this I know
For the Bible tells me so
Little ones to Him belong
They are weak but He is strong

Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
The Bible tells me so

Jesus loves me He who died
Heaven’s gate to open wide
He will wash away my sin
Let His little child come in

Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
The Bible tells me so

Jesus loves me, this I know
As He loved so long ago
Taking children on His knee
Saying, “Let them come to Me.”

Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
The Bible tells me so

Then children were brought to Him that He might lay His hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” And He laid His hands on them and went away.

Matthew 19:13-15 (ESV)

Is the love of God simple yet profound? The answer, of course, is yes.

The love of God is one of the most profound ideas in the universe. The fact that God’s love is shared eternally among Father, Holy Spirit, and Son is profound. The fact that God created the world with an abundance of love is profound. The fact that God loves each individual even before his birth is profound. The fact that God loves us despite our sins is profound. The fact that God loves deeply enough to hate anything or anyone that dares stand in the way of love, with a holy, burning wrath, is profound. The fact that God Himself, in human flesh, died for His own enemies is profound. What marvelous, profound truths we declare when we say that God is love!

And yet, the love of God is also one of the simplest ideas in the universe. The fact that God loves us and wants us to be His children is a simple truth. The fact that God is our Creator is a simple truth. The fact that God is calling for us to believe in Him is a simple truth. The fact that Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me,” is a simple truth. The fact that God is good and wants the best for us is a simple truth. What marvelous,  simple truths we declare, when we say that God is love.

Isn’t this who our God is:  so approachable and yet so transcendent; so immanent and yet so unreachable? Praise Him, for we are called to Him even as little children, and yet learn more to love about Him each and every day! What unsearchable depths of His wisdom and love!

God loves you, gentle reader. Let this truth wash away all fear.
