O Love That Will Not Let Me Go
(George Matheson)

Leaning on God’s Unfailing Love

LYRICS (Click to minimize)

Oh Love that will not let me go
I rest my weary soul in Thee
I give Thee back the life I owe
That in Thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be

Oh Love that will not let me go

Oh Joy that seekest me through pain
I cannot close my heart to Thee
I trace the rainbow through the rain
And feel the promise is not vain
That morn shall tearless be

Oh Love that will not let me go

Oh Cross that liftest up my head
I dare not ask to fly from Thee
I lay in dust’s life’s glory dead
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be

Oh Love that will not let me go
Oh Love that will not let me go

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;

his mercies never come to an end;

they are new every morning;

great is your faithfulness.

“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,

“therefore I will hope in him.”

Lamentations 3:22-24 (ESV)

The Chinese New Year is coming, and with it comes many sentiments. Some hope for a new start after a difficult year. Some hope for simple peace and predictability after a year of turmoil. Some hope for a continuation of a year that has been mostly peaceful and calm. All hope for a year filled with love, peace, and joy.

All of these are good things. With each new year, we look ahead to the things that lie ahead of us. However, if the last two years have taught us anything, it is that we know nothing of our own future. The entire world was turned upside down in one fell swoop. Many of us lost loved ones. Many of us lost jobs and financial stability. Many of us have lost emotional stability and mental health. All of us heard the world cry out in pain.

In times like these, the response should neither be foolish optimism nor bitterness. Let us not put our hope in wishful thinking, nor lose hope entirely. Instead, let us put our hope in the one thing that never fails: the eternal love of God.

The turmoil of the last years showed us that nothing is stable. Nothing we used to put our hopes in– whether that is family, health, finance, or anything else– proved to be worth putting our trust in. Nothing, indeed! Therefore, let us instead redirect our focus unto the Provider of all, who reigns on high over all the world.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. Put your trust in Him: the Love that will not let you go. In Him, rest your weary soul. In Him, find your light in the darkness. In Him, find your joy. Commit the new year, not to empty dreams, but to the One who is faithful!

Come trace with me the rainbow through the rain, knowing that we await the morn that shall endless be.
