The One Love That Never Changes

LYRICS (Click to minimize)

O the deep, deep love of Jesus!
Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free
Rolling as a mighty ocean
In its fullness over me
Underneath me, all around me
Is the current of Thy love
Leading onward, leading homeward
To Thy glorious rest above

O the deep, deep love of Jesus
Tis a heav’n of heav’ns to me
And it lifts me up to glory
For it lifts me up to Thee
O the deep, deep love of Jesus
Spread His praise from shore to shore
How He loveth, ever loveth
Changeth never, nevermore

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:35, 38-39 (ESV)

Love is an essential motivator of the human soul. From our birth, we immediately learn to love those who care for us and nurture us. As we grow older, we learn to love the things that surround us. We learn to love our family and friends. We learn to love a significant other. We learn to love life.

Yet, because love is such an important part of humanity itself, it is one of the most often corrupted. The godless world looks for answers where there are none, because true love is only found in God Himself! Any human representation of love can only be called true love if it reflects the unconditional, unchanging, steadfast love of our God who is Love.

The world tells us that true love is found only in self-love. Others say that true love is found only in sexual satisfaction. Yet others insist that true love does not even exist! Even well-meaning Christians may claim that true love is only found in marriage and nowhere else, implying that the lonely “single” Christians are inevitably loveless.

No one is ever truly alone. No one is ever truly denied love! In a world of fallen love, we continue to confess the truth that love flows from the eternal springs of Love Himself, God! This is the One Love that never changes!

Know this if you are lonely and hopeless in your search for love: the love of Jesus will never forsake you. This is not simply a sappy, abstract concept! This was ultimately proven when Jesus decided to give up His life for you and me. Jesus, God Himself, became humanity itself, feeling all our pain and our sorrow, and even our death. Jesus reclaimed what it means to be human; He redeemed humanity so that we may be able to love and be loved once again!

We should not fear our intrinsic desire to love. Indeed, we should avoid the fallen loves of the world, as those are merely insincere or temporal loves. The God who formed us, and Jesus, the truest image of God, are calling for us. His love never changes and never fails.

“You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”

Augustine of Hippo, Confessions

We are made to love, and made to respond to the true love of God! Know that there is a Love that never fails in a fickle world. Know that there is a Love that never changes in an ever-changing world. Know that there is a Love so deep that death itself cannot separate us from Him!
