Holding on to the Resurrection and Life

LYRICS (Click to minimize)

Wonderful, merciful Savior
Precious Redeemer and Friend
Who would have thought that a Lamb
Could rescue the souls of men
Oh, You rescue the souls of men

Counselor, Comforter, Keeper
Spirit we long to embrace
You offer hope when our hearts have
Hopelessly lost our way
Oh, we’ve hopelessly lost the way

You are the One that we praise
You are the One we adore
You give the healing and grace
Our hearts always hunger for
Oh, our hearts always hunger for

Almighty, infinite Father
Faithfully loving Your own
Here in our weakness You find us
Falling before Your throne
Oh, we’re falling before Your throne

You are the One that we praise
You are the One we adore
You give the healing and grace
Our hearts always hunger for
Oh, our hearts always hunger for

You are the One that we praise
You are the One we adore
You give the healing and grace
Our hearts always hunger for
Oh, our hearts always hunger for

Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the Resurrection and the Life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”

John 11:18-27 (ESV)

As we near the time of year when we especially remember the death of Christ, it is always wise to remember the significance of His death, and our relationship to it. We as Evangelical Christians often forget the significance of our union with Christ in His death, and instead lean on vague sentimentality. Yet Christ died so that we may have life! We come to Him that we may die with Him, thereafter to rise with Him and never die.

Oh the horrendous beauty of this image! Christ Himself on the cross, dying that we may not be lost to death forever. Christ taking the judgment of man, so that man does not have to take the judgment of God! Christ being separated from His Father, with whom He had spent eternal communion, so that we may not have to be separated from God. Christ being the Lamb who spilled His blood for us, so that it is not our blood that has to be spilled.

And in that dark moment, we think of that glorious thought: Christ is not to be held down by the grave forever! He is risen, and continues to atone for us in His place at the right hand of God.

Since we have died and been raised with Him, let us continue to wait for that final resurrection. Let us wait in this time of suffering, for a time when we will suffer no longer. Let us wait in this time of sin, for a time when we will be glorified in Christ. Let us wait in this time of separation, for a time when the church will consummate its marriage with Christ.

In the meantime, we declare with Martha: “Yes, Lord; I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”
