You’re Beautiful

A Meditation on the Beauty of God (Part I)

LYRICS (Click to minimize)

I see Your face in every sunrise
The colours of the morning are inside Your eyes
The world awakens in the light of the day
I look up to the sky and say, “You’re beautiful”

I see Your power in the moonlit night
Where planets are in motion and galaxies are bright
We are amazed in the light of the stars
It’s all proclaiming who You are, “You’re beautiful”

I see You there hanging on a tree
You bled and then You died and then You rose again for me
Now You are sitting on Your heavenly throne
Soon we will be coming home, You’re beautiful

When we arrive at eternity’s shore
Where death is just a memory and tears are no more
We’ll enter in as the wedding bells ring
Your bride will come together and we’ll sing, “You’re beautiful”
Oh, You’re beautiful

I see your face, You’re beautiful
You’re beautiful, You’re beautiful

I see your face, You’re beautiful
You’re beautiful, You’re beautiful

I see your face, You’re beautiful
You’re beautiful, You’re beautiful
You’re beautiful

The heavens declare the glory of God,

and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

Psalm 19:1 (ESV)

The beauty of God is one of His perfections that is so often talked about in the modern church, yet so seldom understood. Even if we capture an aspect of God’s beauty, we often fall short of the immensity and gravity of what God’s beauty means. Indeed, no human can come close to describing God’s beauty; even our confession of our inability to capture it declares a lot about what God being beautiful means!

One does not have to look far to see things that are truly beautiful. One only needs to look up at the night sky, or gaze upon a sunset. One only needs to look at the details on a bird’s wing, or the soft step of the cat’s felt paws. Creation itself sings the praises of its Maker!

Let us join with creation in declaring the beauty of God! Whenever we look at the beauty of nature, let us not think of finite things. Let us instead truly realize that nature is the masterpiece of our good Father. Take a moment right now, dear friend, and look out the window, thanking God for every cloud in the sky and every ray of the sun, or every beam of the moon!

The world preaches many messages about the earth. Some only seek to abuse the world for their own benefit. Some idolize the world, such that created things are worshiped more than the Creator. Both are tragic, and we must hold fast to the truth. All things are created not for their own sakes nor only for humankind’s sake, but for the glory of God Himself! Every beautiful thing sings the praise of its Maker!

Yet does all this fully sum up the beauty of God? Even as we fully, genuinely appreciate the beauty of God found in nature, we crave something more—something more real and something more ultimate. We will continue to meditate on this ideal beauty in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, look up, and worship!
